World Cup 2006 Final Seating

Berlin's Olympic Stadium seating in black and white shot by Dennis Marciniak

__________

This is the stadium where the final of the 2006 World Cup took place in Germany. I visited the Olympiastadion in 2008 and must say it has to be one of my favourite stadiums. Clearly I have posted this image today because it is the start of the 2010 World Cup, and you can be assured I will be watching the first match. The Toronto Star has great local coverage of the matches with kickoff times in EST. It will be interesting to see all the new elite stadiums.

Repairing the TTC Subway Tunnel

A TTC crew working to repair the electric functions of the subway at Runnymede station

___________

I can't remember the last time I shot in the TTC. I was on the way to shoot some stores this morning when I caught this at Runnymede station on the Bloor-Danforth line. The workers didn't seem to mind that I was taking photos of them which is always nice. I shot this subway station once in 2006, and again in 2008.

Small layers that exist in certain images are always interesting - especially when those elements are isolated. For example, the men in the tunnel, the subway operator, and the children in the window; aren't aware of each other but from this view they all can be seen at once. Things like that have always made me stop and look at photos for longer periods of time rather than just skipping them... or maybe I just read into it too much.

GMP Industrial

Another image from the industrial landscape series shot in Toronto by Dennis Marciniak

__________

An image that I must have skipped when I was uploading the "Industrial Landscape" series online. I never thought the subject matter was anything spectacular but always enjoyed how many layers of information are contained within this photograph. I really debated putting this into colour as there is a lot of contrast but it wouldn't fit with the other images in the series. I guess you really can't have your cake and eat it too sometimes.

Subway Construction on the Damrak

The construction on the Subway in Amsterdam along the Damrak that has existed for years now. July 2007

__________

They've been building this subway for years now. Due to the amount of canals Amsterdam has, water tends to get into the soil and soften it. Building a tunnel underground (underneath a river) has been a huge construction challenge and even though a lot of surveying has been done - it can be halted at any time. Amazingly, even with all this construction the city seems to manage as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on. The trams are so efficient that I sometimes question if they really need a subway.

Check out the graffiti just underneath the yellow construction crane. It somewhat looks like a face which has always made me chuckle. This will be the last photograph from 2007 for awhile as I've bombarded this blog with images of that trip in the past week.

Amsterdam Street Cat

A street cat in Amsterdam that is sick

_________

I remember walking by this cat in Amsterdam and wondering what was wrong with it because it wasn't very attentive as most cats are. I stopped and took a picture and then came closer to the cat to pet it and leave it some of my chicken nugget. There are a lot of street cats in the city, and usually they're all pretty active but this guy was sick or something - I don't think McDonalds helped the situation either.

My friend, (Neven Matic) has launched his design/media blog. Check it out.
